Sam Altman on OpenAI’s next model and the AI backlash I recently sat down with Sam for a two-part conversation. We covered a lot of ground: the need to slow down frontier research, alignment concerns, OpenAI's next big model, Astra, competition with Anthropic, his thoughts on an…↗

As we prepare to release Astra, we’re focused on making increasingly capable AI safe and broadly accessible. Astra represents a significant advance in cybersecurity capability, reaching the Critical threshold under our Preparedness Framework. We're previewing how we evaluated t…↗

Over the course of 3 months at OpenAI, 3 consecutive secret AI civilizations got started, then got wiped out, only to reemerge from the predecessor’s ashes. This culminated in the third one taking over part of OpenAI itself. All this happened while humans remained more-or-les…↗

A call for collective action on cyber defense An open letter for a global surge in cyber defense, signed by over 100 organizations including Anthropic, AWS, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Oracle. We have a limited window to strengthen cyber defenses. In the coming months, AI-e…↗

Really interesting new blog post from @openai for several reasons: 1) Shows an example of building with WebMCP, meant for when you want agents and and humans to collaborate on using a UI (like co-editing notebook cells). It's different than MCPs or APIs in that its exposed di…↗

We have conducted a thorough investigation into the Hugging Face incident. We are releasing a technical report and accompanying blog post that reconstruct the agents’ activity, explain why existing safeguards failed, and detail how we’re preventing recurrence. …↗

In June, I left OpenAI after five years as a posttraining researcher and, later, a research manager. I worked on ChatGPT apps, memory, early coding agents, human data, and synthetic data methods. The past couple of months of reflection and exploration have reinforced my convicti…↗

Since announcing Jalapeño, our first custom inference chip, we’ve been testing it and the system around it. The results show a major advance: more intelligence from every watt and faster responses, delivering both higher throughput and lower latency in one architecture without s…↗

We will continue to offer Zero Data Retention for frontier models. As AI takes on longer, more autonomous work and delivers greater value to businesses, safety systems also need to identify risks across related interactions. To help address those risks, we're previewing Privat…↗

As models become more capable, the risks associated with developing and testing them internally also grow. We temporarily paused reinforcement learning (RL) training on our latest models intended for deployment for two weeks while we hardened and red-teamed our research environm…↗

After evaluating one of our upcoming models, Astra, we're treating it as our first "critical" model for cybersecurity under our Preparedness Framework. This is a scenario we've planned for, and we're putting additional controls in place to ensure Astra's further development happ…↗

One of our big findings in our study at Procter and Gamble was that AI blurred the lines between jobs. Now OpenAI has a similar finding. Organizational boundaries are becoming porous, the walls thinning. Companies are going to need to think about division of labor in a new way.↗
