Thread: The best consumer marketplaces end up supply-constrained, because they tap into an incredible amount of demand. For instance, Airbnb, Lyft, and Uber have seemingly infinite demand since the product/market fit is so strong--and this demand puts pressure on supply.↗

Projects that yield great results often wouldn't seem promising to a rational person. Fortunately some people have a compensating irrationality: they're so interested in the project that they'll work on it for its own sake.↗

Thread: “Fake it til you make it” is a key strategy for overcoming the chicken-and-egg problem of starting a new marketplace, popularized by companies like Uber and Yelp. The idea is to bootstrap one side of the marketplace inorganically in order to attract the other side.↗

Time for a story, since @gustaf is asking for some stories about talking to users for a YC presentation. This is how Lambda School was born, and it's way less sexy than everyone assumes.↗

🤝 My biggest lessons in how to build your professional network... 1. Build community. There's no better way to improve your reputation in a field than to be the one bringing people together. Offline is key: Host events. Big or small. Conferences, meetups or dinners all work.↗

💬 I often get Q’s like these: How did you get your first customers for WIP? How did you grow BetaList’s traffic? Etc. Makers are looking to reverse-engineer success. I see it everywhere. I don’t think it works that way and the answers to those questions are mostly useless. 💥↗
